Acclimate to the altitude

Mountain life has amazing benefits. Beautiful scenery, sports and activities for all seasons… but also ALTITUDE. Sun Valley and Ketchum sit at 5,943’ above sea level. While that’s not the highest altitude you could experience, when you visit your body still needs time to acclimate!

Here are a few of our favorite tips, since no one wants to waste a day dealing with altitude sickness!

When you arrive, HYDRATE. Then hydrate some more. You many think you’re drinking enough water but at elevation you almost always need more. The best solution we’ve found is to upon arrival drink something with electrolytes (coconut water is our personal fave as it’s the most natural). Feeling really depleted? Our friends at Sun Valley Hydration offer replenishing drips. Sounds crazy but really makes an impact!

Take a TYLENOL. One of the worst parts of altitude sickness is the headache and slight nausea. Get ahead of it by taking a tylenol twice on your first day.

A few extra CARBS or a supplement with SALT can make all the difference. If you’re an outdoor athlete, you may have used goo or similar products before. We’ve found them helpful keeping our bodies energized and hydrated not only when we’re out hitting it hard on the trails and slopes, but in those first two days of acclimating.

Be mindful of what you DRINK. We are big fans of red wine but at elevation, we save it for after we’ve been in the mountains for a few days. Lighter white wines or bubbly, less caffeine and heavy reds will save you lots of misery. If you simply can’t live without that cabernet on your first day, really hydrate before and after.

Use the HUMIDIFIER + get a little extra rest. We’ve got a humidifier in the closet for a reason.. it’s a great way to stay comfy in all seasons.
