Elevation requires (extra) hydration

Whether you’re a newbie to Sun Valley or a pro at visiting towns at elevation, how you hydrate can make all the difference during your stay.

Between the sun, the dry air and the altitude, you can get depleted quickly. Add in some apres skiing, biking, hiking cocktails and you can quickly feel pretty bad. When in the mountains a little extra attention to what you’re opting for when hydrating will ensure a fun stay. A few of our faves:

Water. It’s obvious, but go hard with the water. From the moment you arrive until the time you leave, it’s a must. When hiking or biking always bring a water bottle.

How to make the water more potent? We love goos and gels or electrolyte additions. The added salt + aminos can help keep you hydrated without feeling overly watered (read: needing to pee every 10 minutes on the trail). A few of our favorites: GU energy tabs, gels + tablets. Available at most outdoor outfitters + online, like here.

Coconut water. Starting your day with the natural electrolytes + minerals in coconut water can fight altitude sickness, give you a boost of energy + provide some extra hydration. Most grocery stores carry at least a few options. We like to choose something organic + not from concentrate.

Go white. Vacation drinking at elevation is a great way to celebrate your stay, but a red wine headache is the worst. We like opting for bubbly, white wines or clear alcohols. Can’t imagine a dinner without your red? Try a lighter bodied varietal + keep up with your water.

Try a drip! It may sound crazy, but IV drips are an amazing treatment to make you feel good. From fighting altitude sickness, to replenishing you after a super dehydrating day to curing that hangover, our friends at Elevated Hydration do an amazing treatments. Book an appointment at their downtown Ketchum location or host them in-unit (up to 6 people).

Happy visiting + happy hydrating.
